Selection of countries

Out of 22 countries in the South Pacific sub-region for which the ILO is serving, the project initially intends to cover five countries, namely: Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. This list includes the ILO Member states in the Pacific region (Vanuatu became the 176th Member state of the ILO on 22 May 2003).

To maximize the effects of the regional networking and the joint capacity building activities, the project will also cover three other countries, namely Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea and Tonga, for the training.

Role of constituents

The ILO’ tripartite constituents will play a central role in addressing the needs of the social security. The workers’ organizations, in particular, have shown a strong interest in improving working conditions. The project will also take into consideration the employers’ concern on the implication of the welfare benefits in the productivity and in the labour costs. Both workers’ and employers’ organisations will commit themselves to sensitize their members to actively participate in the project activities, which will contribute to an improved understanding and increased awareness on the extension of the social protection coverage.
